Nationwide Skilled Trades is seeking a qualified 1st & 2nd Class Marine Painter to support daily operations at a local Shipyard in Norfolk, VA.
Job Overview:
We are seeking experienced and detail-oriented 1st & 2nd Class Marine Painters to join our team. This role involves preparing and painting various surfaces on ships and marine structures in accordance with established industry standards. As part of our skilled trade team, you will be responsible for ensuring high-quality finishes and protective coatings in a safe and efficient manner.
The successful candidates will have hands-on experience in industrial & Shipyard painting, excellent attention to detail, and a strong commitment to safety.
Key Responsibilities:
- Surface Preparation: Clean, sandblast, and prep surfaces to ensure proper adhesion of paint and coatings, including handling and operating abrasive blasting equipment.
- Application of Coatings: Apply various types of paint, coatings, and sealants to ship surfaces, including hulls, tanks, and interiors, using brushes, rollers, and spray equipment.
- Quality Control: Inspect surfaces for defects, ensuring a high standard of work, proper thickness, and uniformity of applied coatings.
- Safety Compliance: Adhere to safety protocols, including the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and maintaining a clean, safe work environment.
- Equipment Maintenance: Maintain and clean tools and equipment after use, ensuring optimal performance and longevity of machinery.
- Team Collaboration: Work closely with other tradespeople and supervisors to ensure timely project completion while maintaining quality standards.
- Documentation: Maintain records of work performed, including materials used, job time, and any issues encountered.
Qualifications & Requirements:
- Experience:
- 1st Class Marine Painter: Minimum of 5 years of experience in marine or industrial painting. Proficiency in applying coatings, working with abrasive materials, and painting high-volume surfaces.
- Must be proficient in the requirements of NAVSEA 009-32 standard item
- Must know how to measure and record DFT and environmental readings
- 2nd Class Marine Painter: Minimum of 2-3 years of experience in marine or industrial painting. Solid experience in surface preparation and painting techniques.
- Technical Skills:
- Expertise in surface prep, including sandblasting, abrasive blasting, and grinding.
- Skilled in applying coatings using brushes, rollers, and spray systems.
- Familiarity with different types of coatings, including epoxy, enamel, and anti-corrosion treatments.
- Certifications & Training:
- Valid OSHA-10.
- Respiratory protection and hazardous material handling certifications (or willingness to obtain).
- Physical Requirements:
- Ability to work in confined spaces, heights, and adverse weather conditions.
- Must be able to lift and move heavy materials (up to 50 lbs).
- Ability to stand, crouch, or kneel for extended periods.
Preferred Skills:
- Previous experience working in a shipyard or marine environment.
- Experience with spray painting and understanding of airless spray equipment.
- Knowledge of environmental and safety regulations.
