1st Class Marine Electrician

Job Summary:
 
Nationwide Skilled Trades is seeking an experienced 1st Class Marine Electrician to support operations at a local Shipyard in Norfolk, VA.
 
This position involves the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of electrical systems aboard commercial and military vessels.
 
The ideal candidate will be highly skilled in marine electrical systems, safety-conscious, and able to work in a dynamic shipyard environment.
 
Key Responsibilities:
 

  • Install and repair shipboard electrical systems, including power distribution, lighting, navigation, communication, and alarm systems.

 

  • Read and interpret blueprints, electrical schematics, cable schedules, and technical manuals.

 

  • Lay out and install cable trays, conduits, wiring, switchboards, distribution panels, and related electrical components.

 

  • Test and troubleshoot systems using meters, meggers, and other electrical testing equipment.

 

  • Connect and terminate electrical cables, including low and high voltage systems.

 

  • Perform insulation resistance testing and continuity checks.

 

  • Ensure compliance with maritime electrical codes (ABS, USCG, NAVSEA, etc.).

 

  • Work safely in confined spaces, at heights, and in various environmental conditions.

 

  • Collaborate with engineers, inspectors, and other trades to ensure timely and accurate completion of projects.

 
Qualifications:
 

  • 3–5 years of marine electrical experience in a shipyard or onboard vessels.

 

  • Strong knowledge of AC/DC systems, control circuits, motor controllers, generators, and switchgear.

 

  • Skilled in reading and interpreting complex electrical drawings and schematics.

 

  • Familiar with marine electrical codes, standards, and safety practices.

 

  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team in fast-paced environments.

 

  • Must be able to pass required background checks for access to secure facilities (if applicable).

 

  • Physically fit to handle climbing, lifting, and working in tight or elevated spaces.

 
Preferred Certifications:
 

  • OSHA 10 or 30 Maritime Safety Certification

 

  • Marine Electrical Trade School or Apprenticeship Completion

 
Work Environment:
 

  • Work performed indoors and outdoors aboard ships, in dry docks, and shop settings.

 

  • Exposed to shipyard conditions: noise, dust, fumes, confined spaces, and varying weather.

 

  • May require overtime, weekends, and night shifts based on project deadlines.
